Geraldine Ferraro Flips Out

Man, does Geraldine Ferraro ever play the 'they' card in her recent column. I had to keep revisiting up page to remind me of just who she is talking about. Like here...
Whom he chooses for his vice president makes no difference to them. That he is pro-choice means little. Learning more about his bio doesn't do it. They don't identify with someone who has gone to Columbia and Harvard Law School and is married to a Princeton-Harvard Law graduate. His experience with an educated single mother and being raised by middle class grandparents is not something they can empathize with. They may lack a formal higher education, but they're not stupid. What they're waiting for is assurance that an Obama administration won't leave them behind.
I had to go back to the previous, long paragraph that began with 'Reagan Democrats,' and even then I had to infer from a Riverdance of choreographed foot-stomping 'they's that she seemed to be talking about white people.  Then, in the penultimate para ---
What they're waiting for is assurance that an Obama administration won't leave them behind.
Again, the 'they' [okay, you can use "those people" but only on whites, you hear?] has drifted from its stereotypical moorings so far it scarcely resembles caucasians. Are South Carolina's white Democrats really fearful of being left behind? And if they are, what do they expect a black president to do for them?

Ferraro's indistinct stance is overcreamed coffee. I'll take my Geraldine black, please, in the form of Flip Wilson.

To her circle of lady friends on the occasion of Geraldine's having had her hair bleached blonde ---

"How do ya'll like my hair, Honey? You don't think it makes me look too Polish, do you?"

Stowing Senatorial Baggage

Steward : Should I put the bag in the overhead?
Assistant: No, wait until her Thorazine kicks in.

Obama/Hillary too much too soon?

.

The lesson is: Only one 'ism' per ticket;
Don't burden the voters with such.
And what's come down as Enlightened Society?
A trillion bucks later... not much.

Push 'em back, push 'em back, waaay back!

How do you like the new meme?

It' nicely counters the one that started in the late seventies when AT&T encouraged customers to "Reach out and touch someone," ie, run up that phone bill. Reaching out was the treacly substitute for "Hey, you."

And after you'd reached out what then? Well, the next meme in line: you shared.

BusinessSpeak of the eighties showed up in meetings that began not with "I have something to tell you," but with, "I have something to share with you."

Very soon, All I Really Need To Know I Learned In Kindergarten became a bestseller. The toddlerization of American was getting blatant. Who would save us?

The terrible twos, it turns out. We've been in pushback mode for about a year now, and it's leaking out of the media diaper. But I don't care. Pushback conjures "I'm mad as hell and I'm not going to take it anymore." In the face of creeping dhimmitude, enough with reaching out and sharing ... the other kid has no intention of reciprocating.

What comes after pushback?

Heh

Think about it.

Stand up, stand up...dammit!

NEW YORK (AP) -ABC, CBS and NBC will air a simultaneous one-hour fundraiser for cancer research ["Stand up to cancer"] in prime-time on Sept. 5. The three network evening news anchors—Katie Couric, Charles Gibson and Brian Williams—were to announce the plans on the network morning news shows Wednesday, but word slipped out earlier.

*Stand up, stand up to cancer

Stand up, stand up to cancer,
You anchors Big Three, now
Pandering for ratings
Since Fox has cleaned your plow.

Divert from orphaned maladies
That need the funding more;
Stand up, stand up to cancer,
You fading di-no-saurs.

*To the tune of "Stand up for Jesus," the hymn written by Reverend Dudley Tyng just before he perished in a tragic incident of mule-fondling.

Miss Daisy Muses

From ABC News on Hill'ry's RFK gaffe... That said, history is history, and Sen. Clinton has been rather clumsily using it to justify her continued candidacy, a candidacy that should be able to rise or fall on its own merits.
"It's sort of like show and tell," Daisy said dreamily as the sagging shade rode the langorous, torpid breeze slowly back and forth across the dusty window sill.

"How's that?" dawdled Leroy feigning interest, his dwindling attention mostly spent on the physics of droplet condensation and the slow march of bulbous liquid down the side of his mint julep glass, although Leroy's intellectual budget allowed for nothing beyond cursory perception, a mayfly held above the puddle by surface tension and light weight.

"Well," continued Daisy, pleased to capture a slow-footed nuance and bear it home aloft in triumph, "Clinton doesn't do a very good job in front of the class with history and Obama has a hard time with geography, and Bush just murders English."

"But all these people have fancy college degrees, Daisy? How can that be?"

"I don't know, Leroy; it just passes me by. When we do get a smart one like, oh, I don't know, Woodrow Wilson, he thinks he can save the world. GIve me the dumb and the uninvolved any day: Harding, Coolidge, and prosperity. It's amazing how sometimes nothing can be a real cool hand."

"Damn, Daisy. That's a great idea for a movie," Leroy allowed.

Don't bogart that geishe, give her to me

Speaking of Wright/Obama and McCain/Hagee...

I love symmetrical politcal scandals. One side decries the other's zits while troweling Clearasil on its own lumpy face ... it illustrates how humans are not only related to apes, but fling poo with the best of them.

And the press ... how better to see how punditry manipulates facts on the ground to turn what should be a chance to stand on principle of some sort into a mass sashay of denial and self delusion.

It's kabuki.

It's Just Medicine

New York Times

The Book of Willem (Reprise)

The Book of Willem

While blasting out some dangerous overhangs in Syria's Petrosian pass, workers discovered a cave that contained pottery shards and parchment fragments. The fragments were reassembled and translate as follows. [All caps in original]

...AND IT CAME TO PASS AT EVENTIDE, THAT WILLEM FELT A BESTIRRING IN HIS LOINS AND A RESTLESSNESS CAME OVER HIM. SO AS TO LEAVE UNBROKEN THE PEACEFUL SLUMBER OF HAKKATHOO, HIS WIFE, WITH MUCH CARE AND SLOWNESS OF MOVING HE AROSE FROM OUT OF HIS BED, AND WITH SILENT FEET OF THE SNOWY EGRET DID HE MAKE WAY INTO THE ROOM OF PROVISIONS. THERE DID WILLEM TAKE A LOAVE OF BREAD, SOME CAKES AND A JAR OF HONEY.

THEN WALKED HE UPON THE ROOFTOP OF THE WING OF THE KING'S HOUSE THAT LIES UNDER THE WESTERN STAR, AND FROM THE ROOF HIS GAZE DID FALL UPON A WOMAN PAINTING HERSELF; AND THE WOMAN WAS FAIR TO LOOK UPON.

"O, SELAH, SELAH, " WILLEM YEARNED. THEN DID HE SEEK OUT HIS MANSERVANT AND ENQUIRE TO HIM AFTER THE WOMAN, SAYING, "ALLO, ALLO, IS NOT THIS SPASMONIEA, DAUGHTER OF ONAN THE THEODOLITE?" AND WILLEM SENT MESSENGERS, AND TOOK HER; AND SHE CAME IN TO THE ROOM WITHOUT EDGES WHERE WILLEM HAD COME TO WAIT.

WHEN WILLEM HEARD THE SOUND OF HER FOOTSTEPS AT THE DOOR, HE SAID, "COME IN, SPASMONIEA OF ONAN THE THEODOLITE. I HAVE RAISED YOU UP FROM AMONG THE PEOPLE AND MADE YOU LIKE BIMBOLONIAS, WHO HAVE KEPT MY COMMANDS AND FOLLOWED ME WITH ALL THEIR HEARTS."

AND SPASMONIEA SPAKE UNTO WILLEM, "BECAUSE OF THIS, I WILL EAT UP THE GLORY OF THE KING; JUST AS ONE BURNS DUNG, UNTIL IT IS ALL GONE. DOGS WILL EAT THOSE WHO WOULD LAY APPROBATION LIKE A LOG AGAINST THY THIGHS, AND THE BIRDS IN THE AIR WILL FEED ON THOSE WHO COME IN FROM THE COUNTRY."

THEN SPASMONIEA DID UNTO HIM ACCORDING TO THE MANNER OF THE SUCCUBBITES, GREAT OF HAIR, UNTIL WILLEM LIFTED UP HIS EYES TO THE HILLS AND SANG WITH THE VOICE OF BAASHCA'S CAMEL, FROM THE HOUSE OF BEN-DONE. AND SPASMONIEA RETURNED TO HER HOUSE WHERE SHE SOUGHT LYNNEDA, HER MISTRESS, AND TOLD HER WHAT HAD BEFALLEN HER, SHOWING UNTO LYNNEDA HER ANOINTED CLOTHING WHICH SHE HAD SAVED.

NOW WHEN WILLEM LEARNED THAT LYNNEDA HAD SEEN THE ANOINTED RAIMENT, HE WAS SORE AFRAID, FOR THE WOMEN OF THE PLACE SAID, " ELVIS HATH SKEWERED HIS THOUSANDS AND WILLEM HIS TENS OF THOUSANDS."

AND KINISHTARR THE PROPHET CAME BEFORE WILLEM AND SAID, "DIDST THOU KNOW THAT WOMAN? "

AND WILLEM SWARE AND SAID, " I KNEW HER NOT IN THE BIBLICAL SENSE." AND ALL THE PEOPLE SAID AMEN.

THEN WAXED HAKKATHOO,THE WIFE OF WILLEM, EXCEEDING WROTH AND SPAKE UNTO THE ELDERS IN THIS MANNER, "FOR THEY ARE IN LEAGUE AGAINST MY LORD, YEA, EVEN THE SONS OF LIMBAA AND LIDEE ," AND SHE CURSED KINISHTARR BY HIS GODS. AND ALL THE PEOPLE SAID AMEN.

THEN WILLEM SENT UNTO SEKKDEF, THE CAPTAIN OF THE HOST, AND LAID UPON HIM IN THIS FASHION, "GO THOU AND JOIN BATTLE WITH THE BABYLONIANS, THAT THE EYES OF THE PEOPLE MIGHT TURN AND NOT LOOK UPON THE RAIMENT OF SPASMONIEA." AND SEKKDEF ROSE AND DID IN ACCORDANCE WITH THE COMMAND OF WILLEM HIS LORD.

AND THE WIFE OF WILLEM CALLED UNTO HER TWO MEN, SONS OF KHARVILEIL, AND SAID, "I WILL THAT YOU FETCH ME THE HEAD OF KINISHTARR THE PROPHET UPON A STAFF, FOR HE HATH BLASPHEMED AGAINST GOD AND AGAINST ME, WHICH COMETH TO THE SAME THING."

AND THE TWO MEN WENT AND TOOK KINISHTARR THE PROPHET AND SLEW HIM, AND BROUGHT HIS HEAD TO THE WIFE OF THE KING.

BUT WHEN THEY DREW NIGH UNTO THE KING¹S HOUSE, THE ELDERS SPIED THEM AND SPAKE UNTO THE MEN, SAYING," WHEREFORE IS KINISHTARR DEAD, AND WHEREIN GUILTY, THAT YOU HAVE BEHEADED HIM?"

AND THE MEN ANSWERED AND SAID, "FOR KINISHTARR AND DIKK, SON OF ARAMEE, HAVE CAST STONES AT THE KING, SEEKING HIS LIFE". AND THE ELDERS CAME INTO THE PRESENCE OF WILLEM AND SAID, "LET THY WORDS BE TRUE AND WREAK NO FALSEHOOD AGAINST US, WAST THOU STONED INDEED?"

AND WILLEM RENT HIS GARMENTS AND SWARE, "NOT IN THE BIBLICAL SENSE." AND ALL THE PEOPLE SAID AMEN.

Burning Desire (reprise)

Burning Desire By Gary Cruse

It was hot in the Oval. Summertime DC.

You know, like when the crawdads clumb onto the mangrove roots just to keep from being gumboed alive. Or was that mandrake? No, that was Lasater's deal.

I was thinking about Gore and wishing he would give me a key to the thermostat covers when she walked in.

"Mr. President, do you remember me? Mrs. Edward Willey?"

Remember her? Legs going up like a Roman candle; a rack to shame the 24-pointer I wasted at Camp David, even if the SS had to tether it first. Yeah, I remembered the dame, like Bennett remembers San Francisco, Sacco remembers Vanzetti, like Hillary remembers...every gall-danged thing. Like how nervous Vince wa...

"Mr. President?"

"Huh? Yes. Yes, Mrs. Willey. Sit down. Sit down."

Her dress was sultry and clingy, like a hot intern. Her knees stayed tight until she was seated. Then she crossed her legs in one practiced motion, her hose making a slithery sound.

Out of all the broke down, multi-colored rug, sweaty hot Oval Offices in the world, she had to pick mine.

I thumbed the intercom and told Betty to hold all calls. Then I asked Willey why she came.

"My husband has embezzled a lot of money that we have to pay back, Mr. President. And I need something more than the volunteer job I have. I mean, Easter Egg rolls...."

I wanted to feel her pain, but she was across the desk. How could I get into her...pantry. That was it. The pantry.

"Mrs. Willey, would you like a cup of coffee?"

She couldn't turn it down. I stood and gestured toward the galley just off the Oval and motioned for her to go in ahead of me. It was like little animals when she walked.

I asked her how many lumps she wanted, but I was thinking about how many lumps I was getting...one in the throat and one down at the Y.

As much as I hate carpet burns, I suggested that we adjourn into the study. Groans I make in the galley ricochet like singing in the shower, and I felt an aria coming on.

The difference between the flourescent lights in the galley and the warm tungsten lamps in the study was startling. Her hair went from copper to a warm auburn and I went for a hug.

As I held her tense frame up close, her warmth began to spread to me, rapidly getting hotter and wetter. I backed up and took her squashed coffee cup from between us and sat it on the end table.

"Mr. President, aren't you afraid someone will walk in here?"

"No, no," I told her how sorry I was for her troubles and pulled her against me again, my lips finding hers before she turned her head sharply, leaving my tongue to dart into her earring.

That was when I realized I was being set up. Women could not resist me. Brother Graham told me so himself.I slid a finger into her breast pocket looking for an West Wing pass in case Hillary had sent her.

There was none.

I would have to threaten her to buy her silence.

I took her hand and made sure she felt the hard barrel of my thigh-holstered snub nose. It's a repeater.

"It's not that I'm glad to see you. It's just something I've wanted to do for a long time," I hissed.

That did it. She paled and backed away, "I have to be going. It would kill my husband if I did this."

More than you ever knew, Sister. More than you ever knew.

Degrees of Freedom

Degrees of Freedom By Gary Cruse

Why doesn't CBS begin to explore the WH's treason, sedition and bribery? Because it is hard to make it interesting? Maybe with a quiz show....

Episode 9822 Mar 18, 1998

[Announce] IT'S DEGREES OF FREEDOM

[Intro music]

[Announce] And here's the Host of DEGREES OF FREEDOM,

KEVIN BACON ! [Applause]

[KB] Thank you, Bob. Welcome to DEGREES OF FREEDOM, where we pay you to tell us, "How many degrees removed am I from this having anything to do with me?"

Let's welcome our guest panelists: Cynthia Pitcairn, from Palo Viral, Arizona; Garth Wunsch, from Malcorpus, Vermont; Eileen Tordja, from Slope, Missouri; and Ezra Acklemeyer, of Oral, Pennsylvania.

[Applause]

[KB] Welcome, panel. Now, for those at home, here's Bob to tell you how we play DEGREES OF FREEDOM. Bob?

[Bob] Thank you, Kevin. Contestants for DOF are given faits accompli by the Clinton administration and asked to provide linkage as to why they should give a damn. The winner goes on to the 'Rubber Meets the Road' round where real consequences take place.

[KB] Thank you, Bob. Now let's get started, shall we? Contestant #1, are you ready to play DEGREES OF FREEDOM?

[CP] Yes, I am, Kevin.

[Applause]

[KB] Alright, Cynthia. The administration gutted the Defense Department's review capacity and sold supercomputers to Communist China. How many degrees before it affects you?

[CP] It didn't do me no good. I ain't living in Silicon Valley. What the hell do I care?

[KB] Wrong, Cynthia. Over to you, Garth. Guided missiles, such as the as-yet-indefensible Mach-3 Russian Yakhont antiship missile are about to be delivered to the PRC. And those supercomputers will allow the Chinese to reverse-engineer and mass produce these ramjet, land-air-or-sea launchable missiles. This will upset the balance of power around Taiwan and Asia in general. Not to mention the loss of American naval supremacy in the Persian Gulf if Iran or Iraq gets this product. How about it Garth? How many degrees to you?

[GW] None of these miss-aisles can reach Vermaaht, Kaavin. Besaades, withaat global positioning technaalogy, even China's baallistic miss-aisles can't hit Malcorpus. Maybe LA. But I don't live in Laas Aangeles. What the haall do I care?

[KB] The best answer so far, Garth. Now, Eileen, the Clinton administration has allowed the export to China of Global Positioning System technology for missile guidance, satellites and satellite technology. How many degrees to you?

[ET] None, Kevin. Like, just so long as these weapons are, you know, kept out of the hands of those loonies in Iraq and Iran. I'm all, "Hellooo??? Are you talking to me?" I mean, a country that helped get Bill Clinton elected, is like righteous, like, you know? [KB] Not bad, Eileen. It's up to you, Ezra. Are are you ready?

[EZ] Yes, I am, Kevin.

[KB] Alright, Ezra! According to publisher Alyn Denham, DNC fund-raiser John Huang worked with Entergy Corporation of North Carolina to buy sophisticated computers, software electronics and telecommunication technology to be used in China's missile guidance systems. Huang funneled $3.4 million in tainted Asian contributions to the DNC during the 1996 election, and Clinton hired the head of Entergy Corporation, Erskine Bowles, to be White House Chief of Staff. How many DEGREES OF FREEDOM before this affects you, Ezra?

[EA] Two degrees, Kevin. I happen to know something about this. Intelligence aides warned the President in '95, and '96, that highly sensitive equipment was being shipped to the PRC from Entergy. Clinton reportedly told the aides that the Pentagon assured him that only obsolete equipment and software were being shipped.

[KB] That's right, Ezra. Although the aides could not find anyone in the Pentagon to verify Clinton's account of the conversation, your answer puts you in the lead going into Round Two. [Applause]

[KB] Alright, panel, Round Two. I would like an answer from each of you on this one, please.

Johnny Chung has alleged that a member of Hillary Clinton's staff solicited him for money and he responded the next day by delivering a $50,000 Democratic donation to the first lady's chief of staff. A few days later, Chung was allowed to bring Chinese businessmen into the White House to watch the president's radio address. How many degrees? Cynthia, let's start with you.

[CP] How can you watch a radio show?

[GW] Two. Aaverybady does it.

[ET] Can we, like, talk about Monica, now?

[EA] Three. Hillary wasn't elected.

[KB] Alright, panel. Well done. We'll total up your scores and see who goes to 'Rubber Meets the Road' after this word from our sponsors.

[Applause]

[Entergy Corp: "Chungy Bowles O' Soup" 30 secs] [COSCO: "The Wong March" 30 secs] [DNC: "Don't Worry, be Happy." 30 secs]

[KB] Welcome back. Our winner today, with five Degrees, is Ezra Acklemeyer.

[Applause]

[ KB] Well done, Ezra. For being our winner, you get the amount of money paid in portage fees to the Chinese government for cargo carried overland between the two Panama Canal anchor points today, due to the Chinese-calculated loss of water in the oceans from El Nino.

[Audience, "Holy shit"]

[EA] Wow.

[KB] Alright, Ezra, the Rubber Meets the Road. Due to the wholesale export of American defense technology to our most likely next enemy, our ability to compensate for hordes of troops with high tech, is gone. Yet US troop strength is only a fraction of what is necessary to handle a major conflict.

As of the start of tonight's program, North Korea has allowed China the use of tunnels under the DMZ to send 1 million cadres in armored columns into Seoul, where they have seized the city. The two major US carrier groups are in the Gulf, trapped by scuttled ships at the entrance and exit, as shore-mounted Sunburns and Yakhonts take out the Aegis cruisers and carriers. Chemical warheads from Iraq have incapacitated our US fighter contingent in Saudi Arabia.

You have fifteen seconds, Ezra. How many DEGREES OF FREEDOM do you have before you are affected? [Ding Dong music]

[Ding Dong]

[KB] Alright, Ezra. You know the situation. How many Degrees before you are affected?

[GW] None, Kevin. This is just so much racist Oriental-bashing. China would never do anything to hurt their MFN status. Besides which, Bill Clinton has shown unparalleled shrewdness in getting what he wants from China, regardless of how much damage it does to the US. [Audience: "Holy shit"]

[KB] Sorry, Ezra, but you win.

[KB] And that's DEGREES OF FREEDOM for this week. Be sure to tune in next week when we look at "The Man in Front of the Tienanmen Tank-- Booed by the Beneficiaries of Liberty"

.... It is sooooo weird. I mean the Jerusalem Post reports that Iran paid Kazakhistan $25 million for two tactical nuclear warheads. .... Now, we're not talking Bikini Atoll here, folks. Tactical is more like "saving our bullets for the wounded." For twelve and a half million per hit, Netanyahu will *sell* you the real estate!

[Laughter]

.... Then the Iranians brought in some Argentinians to work on the warheads. Argentinians? What is that? Are the gauchos herding neutrons on the pampas, now?

[Laughter]

.... I mean, where's the BEEF?

[Laughter]

.... But the Argentinians can't figure out how to get the warheads open to see what makes them work. Engineer .... Turkan, chairman of the defense industries said the Argentinians were "lazy, greedy, and egotistical." .... Isn't there a word in Iranian for "inexperienced?"

[Laughter]

.... Then Turkan "expressed hope that the group of experts from Russia that arrived in Iran will not cause these problems." Hey, you void the warranty with cheap help, then want Mother to fix? Ayatollah you, but you woona listen.

[Laughter]

.... And, according to Publius, those seals are in fact KGB security locks placed on the warheads to prevent them from being used without authorization [Strategic Investments 1994]. .... The Iranians paid the Khazaks $25 million for two large, heavy, radioactive paperweights.

[Laughter]

.... So the Iranians gave them to the Chinese in return for nuclear and missile technology (which the Chinese got thanks to Bill Clinton). The Chinese want the bombs for the "sole purpose of studying KGB security seals."

.... You say Irani, I say Iraqi. .... Let's call the whole thing off.

Bill Clinton's J' Aveour a Trois

Brought over from days of old...
Bill Clinton's J' Aveour a Trois
By Gary Cruse

President Bill Clinton started his day in South Africa by going to services at the Regina Mundi Roman Catholic Church, which served as a refuge for members of the popular movement that replaced the country's apartheid system with democracy four years ago.

"I am profoundly honored to be in this great house of God," Clinton said at the church in Soweto, the sprawling slum outside Johannesburg. The congregation of about 1,000 gathered in the church enthusiastically welcomed the President, but began to murmur doubtfully when Clinton was overheard describing a statue of the Virgin Mary, "That's a good looking virgin. I wish I had a virgin like that at the White House." Outspoken members of the congregation insisted that Clinton was unworthy of taking Communion with them, and probably wasn't even a Catholic.

In a hastily arranged meeting with Monsignor Adidas Nkomo, Mrs Clinton pleaded that the President had briefly attended parochial school as a youth. But Monsignor Nkomo ruled that the President, even with a bishopric dispensation, would be required to undertake the sacrament of confession; that Clinton could not receive Communion if he had sinned and had not gone to Confession, admitted his sin, vowed not to sin again, and recited Penance.

In a heated discussion, Mrs Clinton contended that she and "El Schmucko" would not be in Africa long enough for her husband to confess all his sins, even if they "went at it round the clock, for ten days." Finally, a compromise was reached whereby the President would confess his sins as quickly as he could to three priests at once for four hours.

The Church's regular confessional was not large enough for j'avouer a trois, so the group adjourned to a small choir practice room. For confidentiality and privacy, a black silk handkerchief was draped over the face of the President and everyone left the room save Mr Clinton and the three fathers confessor.

About fifteen minutes into the confession, one priest opened the door, came out of the confession room and closed the door softly behind him. Clearly distraught, the Father recounted that the litany of misdeeds was such a travesty, that the corpus on the wall-mounted crucifix in the room had climbed down off the cross and leaped out the window.

Half an hour later, a second priest emerged with tales of a levitating piano and green peasoup-like liquid being projected from behind the silk handkerchief while the penitent's head revolved wildly on his shoulders.

Father Nsoto, the remaining priest, stayed the entire four hours and heard the confession. Escorted from the Church by American Secret Service men, the dumbstruck priest was unable to find his tongue until, as reported by the Secret Service, as they placed him in an official car Nsoto said he felt depressed and suicidal.

Following the service, Clinton spoke briefly from the pulpit, as did the Rev. Jesse L. Jackson. Jackson is special envoy to Africa and a member of Clinton's delegation. While he once had edgy relations with Clinton, Jackson has more recently been an informal spiritual adviser to the Clintons during the Monica Lewinsky controversy. Today, he asked the congregation to "pray for President Clinton, whose boldness and daring" are helping to "bring down ancient walls."

Actually, there was plenty of outrage on the right over Paula Jones and Gennifer Flowers, while we only got uninterrupted silence from the usual Outrage-of-the-Day types at NOW. Sorry you slept through the ’90’s, sweetie. Reading the New York Times for information will do that to you.

Pass the pale, I'm gonna Bush

Breitbart

Bush has said the 70,000 barrels of oil being diverted to the Strategic Petroleum Reserve is such a small amount that it does not affect energy markets.

And yet one person in California growing weed for his own medicinal use affects interstate commerce?

Then either Gonzales (nee Ashcroft) v Raich was in insane verdict on a Bush administration prosecution that should never have reached the USSC, or the President is so constricted by his socially conservative hypocrisy he's gone past the pale.

A man of the people

What? Man, I been eatin' japaleno peppers all my...holy christ...Shit!....JEEZUS!!!

Palpitating Pulpits

Sounds like Christians of the time traded meaningful policy for a feel-goodism.

"We're a church; we're different; while any other profit-making entity must cough up to support the commons, somehow being taxed violates the establishment clause and we won't have it."

"Okay, then. No taxes for you."

"Good."

"In return no partisan activity from you."

"What?"

"Democracy has a compelling interest in government not subsidizing partisan political activity."

"What?  What kind of liberal nonsense is that?"

"The Republicans had a majority of both the Senate and the House as well as the Presidency in 1954. These changes may be due to then-Senator LBJ, but they were approved by the GOP and signed by Eisenhower."

"But surely God favors one party over the other!"

"To the extent there is a God, yes.  In other words, no."

"Well, government shouldn't mess with my religion."

"Say now, 1954...wasn't that about the time 'under God' was shoe-horned into the Pledge of Allegiance?    Politics was plucked from the pulpit, and the pulpit was poked into the Pledge.  Priceless."

"You mean God's institutions are penalized if they try to influence a government that the Pledge says is Under God?"

"Yes.  It's called Catch-22."

"That's some catch."

"It's the best there is."

To paraphrase Rosanne Roseannadanna's father

As President Bush said to [Mark Steyn]: "If it's not the Crusades, it's the cartoons."

Halleloser!!

I'm tempted to give Obama advice similar to that Brother Dave Gardner once comedified --- "James Lewis, get away from that wheelbarruh. You knows you don't know nothin' 'bout machinery." Only I'd substitute church for wheelbarrow and "what you believe" for machinery.

So how's the WOT goin', eh?

"Only a third of FBI special agents and intelligence analysts have access to the Internet at their desktops. FBI personnel lack the ability to store and share images and audio files associated with intelligence investigations." ---- FBI is called slow to join the terrorism fight They didn't have any problem setting up online computers for agents to look for pornography, though, did they? Oh, wait ... did you say porn? Oh, my. Teh prOn! Teh prOn!
According to FBI headquarters, the war against smut is "one of the top priorities" of Attorney General Gonazalez and FBI Director Robert Meuller. Although law enforcement agencies have always been aggressive when it comes to prosecuting exploitative child pornographers, this new initiative is unique in that it targets Internet pornography featuring consenting adults.

You say you had a revolution?

A lefty supreme court looking to achieve economic/social justice might be tempted to look beyond the Constitution to extranational law. Thank goodness we don't have one of THOSE. Our righty court only goes outside the Constitution when it is necessary to abrogate the notion of federalism, striking down icky states who traduce social conservatism's notion of the common good by allowing people to...well, you know. If the early Republic had be constrained by the sumo-sized Federal Register of today, the baby would have been crushed in the crib.

Something I didn't know but you probably do

"Born to Be Wild," [Steppenwolf's] third single on ABC-Dunhill, was immortalized on the soundtrack of Dennis Hopper's underground film classic Easy Rider. The song's reference to "heavy metal thunder" finally gave an assignable name to an emerging genre.

Notes and Asides without actually blogging...

*I read Coulter strictly for the bombast, a word which when used in association with Ann Coulter is compellingly onomatopaic.
*Oh god, do I hate Omarosa, the black Sandra Bernhard {Helen Thomas's Dorian Gray).
*Here's the most fun I ever had in a passenger jet---
I was on a flight out of Calgary, Alberta to Toronto in a L-1011 widebody. We had hardly retracted the landing gear following take off when a very loud percussion resembling a machine gun firing arrived accompanied by rapid jolts.

It was one of the few times in my life that I seriously thought there was a good chance I was gonna die. Oddly, there was no panic or fear, just resignation and the thought that it had been good while life lasted.

The pilot wheeled the airliner around and took us back to the Calgary airport which, upon our arrival, had fire trucks and foam trucks lining the runway. We landed safely.

I found out later that one of the struts in one of the huge L-1011 engines had come loose and was sucked back into the turbine. The machine-gun fire we heard was the strut breaking turbine blades in its journey through the motor.

Good times!

*Conservatives who thought they had ordered Republican takeout but when they opened the bag at home found it was Democrat-lite can be forgiven their bewilderment if not their apathy. The Contract with America was the clarion call the Republican congress and administration ignored once they got hold of the levers of power. Now they wonder where its supporters went. One of the places is not-to-the-polls.

As for you, Newt, a few more photo-ops with Pelosi and you can go somewhere, too.

*The last time the high imprisonment rate for blacks came up in meatspace, I told the complainant that the courts were evidently even more sexist than the racism being claimed.

When he asked why, I asked him to note that half the population is female and half male, yet prisoners are overwhelmingly male; so justice must be biased.

When he objected that it was because men committed more crime than women, his voice got softer and softer as it slowly dawned on him the fallacy of his belief.

*All I know is that if Reefer Madness is a documentary, I've been paying a lot of money for oregano.

*James Joyce is as unlikeable to me now as he was to the offended back then. I think art that isn't attempting to suade is enjoyable regardless of the artist's politics, but that would mostly apply, I think, to sculpture, paint, architecture and not so much writing. Art Buchwald wrote for many years in a mildly leftist manner that was inoffensive and as exciting as a bucket of warm beer.

Give me Dorothy Parker and Camille Paglia any day. I disagree with them in many areas but feast on their writing. For that matter, my favorite writer of the time, Sinclair Lewis was sharply skewering the society he saw yet I count myself on the conservative, albeit libertarian, side of the divide.

Can we partake of polemical art without being molded by it? Good question.

*Everyone knows computers run on smoke because when the smoke comes out, your computer doesn’t work.

Libertarians are not monolithic on abortion. Probably
most are at least partly pro-choice, but there is a significant
pro-life segment to the movement. I refer you to Libertarians for Life.

Abortion is a uniquely controversial issue. Among libertarians,
this debate consists of multiple questions, including:
· whether abortion should be illegal
· if so, at what level of government this should be enforced
· whether or not the government should fund abortions
The vast majority of libertarians are agreed on the latter question, believing that government should not fund personal activity, especially activity of such a controversial nature. However, as to whether abortion should be legal, they are split as equally as the mainstream.[1] Many libertarians believe that a woman's ownership of her own body, and therefore her right to control it, includes her right to terminate her pregnancy without any interference. Others believe the fetus has a human right to life, and that an abortion is the initiation of fatal force against a helpless victim.

Reading that post, it appears to me as a neutral observer

For example, does he even know that you have a daughter

I don’t think it was personal at all.
I’m sorry if you took offense. I understand. I wouldn’t

But I really don’t think that it was meant in a
hurtful personal way. Just my opinion.

So, I would therefore like familyop banned, since I haven't pimped for quite some time and have been deeply offended by the comment. Even were your logic sound, so what?
An argument can't be any better than the premise
it's based on. If "family" exists in the absence
of authoritarian government, or in the presence of
libertarian society then the premise of libertarianism
being opposed to family is questionable, and the
entire argument along with it.

Well, you're right about some social conservatives striding too
unreflectively from social criticism to political policymaking.
I hope I stride reflectively :^)
...but I take your point.
An example would be: what you could call "private" lying
(excluding fraud, breach of contract, libel.) Another example:
truly private vice (by consenting adultoids in their very own private kinkorama.) For such things, the invasions of privacy needed to discover and prosecute the offenses, would arguably create evils outweighing the original offenses.
And they can and should be criticized adequately by moral teaching and social satire.

So someone responds to a ridiculously hypothetical
situation with a hypothetical response, and gets

And what is his entire family doing huddled around the computer?
This place is starting to resemble Cal-Berkeley.

I’m gonna threaten Jim Robinson that he better do
something about it or WE WILL”
Again Jim...please notice it was familyop that

Many do. But I for one expect government to respect the social
compacts that we have already made by codifying them. Libertarians think more in terms of contracts, and expect the government to enforce these.

"You bait the thread with inflammatory nonsense to take
offense in an appropriate reply? This is sad."

That's not true. The scenario that I presented was an
honest reaction to having read the Libertarian Platform.
Libertarianism is most often dishonestly presented,
even with misleading theses in the Platform.

http://www.lp.org/issues/platform_all.shtml

"BTW - I was also a Combat Engineer and can’t recall any so sensitive as you."

That's not true. The comment was not made about me.

Maybe I shouldn't so routinely display anything about my
service then. I saw a woman who was in a construction type
("combat heavy") of combat engineer unit and had "mom"
tattooed on her bicep. A platoon sergeant in a National
Guard combat engineer unit (combat--not construction)
had transferred from the Navy and done the quickie
combat engineer school for transfers. He was a social worker.
He hated men and whole families. The enlisted dope
smokers in that unit were promoted first. Each of
his platoon members left as soon as their enlistments
expired. A neighbor of mine was a combat engineer
 (cbt.--not construction). He's been advocating
in favor of Iran, saying, "Iran's a sovereign nation. Why shouldn't Iran have nuclear weapons?"

Now I've received a message from a former combat
engineer who apparently supports the Libertarian Platform.
I'm not comparing you with or relating you to the
former anecdotes (except for Libertarian support for such behaviors), but all of the mentioned instances are saddening to me. My point is that our nation is degraded and weakened by the libertine trends and increasingly sophisticated dishonesties.

I'll leave you with the following link to disgusting political activism.

Google: Results 1 - 10 of about 29,600 [search engine hits]

That's not a problem as long as it's done with the established
framework of the Constitution. Too many think that if a case
can be made that something is within reach of government
control, then it matters not the means, method, or l
evel of government that does it.

It was nothing more than an exact quote.
Jim is very good at discerning context,
when he has the time to mess with it.

"I wish you would consider standing up and
asking for the decision against gcruse to be reversed."

Here's another quotation, from "Guidelines for posting"

I warned others about the dangers to their children,
of a nation that effectively abolishes certain criminal laws.
The creep in the scenario of my first comment is the bad
guy--not anyone's kid, and not any kid's parents in such
a hypothetical national situation of anarchy.

Young people learn from both their parents and their peers.
Where both parents are working (which situation some
authors for Reason Magazine have advocated much) and have
their kids in public schools or bad private schools,
peer pressures can dominate.

What laws would those be?
No laws... There's no place for realistic questions here.
In that regard, this is strictly philosophical.
If you insist I give a hypothetical- poker. Given that
it bothers somebody somewhere, the system pays lawmen
to follow a process that ultimately leads to one's
forceful detainment, fines, prison, etc.
I'd rather a pack of young Muslim men go around

Libertarians greatly condemn one person’s freedom
interfering with another’s, which is what you described.
No. They only condemn one person’s freedom interfering
with another’s when it's someone else's infringing on them.
Seems to me that most libertarians are all for their own
personal freedom and don't mind imposing it on others at all.
It seems to be a very hypocritical viewpoint.

The Constitution was a sort of social compact, one which
respected the integrity of the several states. I’m afraid
much of that has gone blewy, because so many politicians
think of it as outdated, an obstacle to the establishment

Libertarianism is the best political philosophy,
but it requires a sense of personal responsibility
and an IQ over 100. Stupid people require clear,
simple rules to follow, or they will end up damaging
themselves and others.
The challenge is how to build a society with clear,
simple rules for the stupid without infringing on the
rights of the intelligent. We've been struggling with
one-size-fits-all laws for a while now, and no one is satisfied.

Marxists seek to destroy all centers of authority other than the
state. That’s why they war with tradition, family, and religion.
The problem with libertarianism is that it helps the left destroy
the authority of local government to maintain traditional
standards based on concern for family and so forth, but
it’s powerless to stop the expanding federal leviathan, which
in fact is enhanced by libertine behavior.

banned but threats are completely ignored?

Be careful with this one, tpaine! If you repeat his

starts making vague threats to “take care of it”.

You have it completely ass backwards. If people were perfect angels,
government could be trusted with power. Since people are corrupt,
government must be limited to the minimum necessary-evil level
of power (i.e. just sufficient to keep the public peace, and no more).
Steve. It's both. If people were angels, we wouldn't need a government.
But we could safely have one because we could trust them to run the government wisely.
OTOH, people being what they are, they make bad decisions that,
collectively, impact the entire society profoundly and its ability
to exist as a society AND they cannot be trusted to act as wise rulers.
That's why it's messy.

For example, I'm sure they never imagined that abortion on
demand would be made legal.
The founders left the governance of moral issues to the
states. So they did address the abortion-on-demand in
terms of how it should be handled.

So, bottom line is you don't know the differences between
libertine and libertarian let alone liberal and you take
yourself so seriously in your home-schooled ignorance that
you bring yourself into well deserved public humiliation.
My advice? Apologize for either posting drunk and/or just
plain ugly, mean, nasty and stupid.
I've perused familyop's posting history and found nothing in
it that even comes close to the slander heaped against him here:
*ignorant*? *drunk*? *just plain ugly, mean, nasty and stupid*?
familyop doesn't engage in that kind of posting style towards others.
But what can be said for YOUR comments?
When can we expect you to apologize for them?

What's this?

Quote from comment #2:

"2 posted on 07/23/2003 3:33:20 PM PDT by gcruse (http://gcruse.blogspot.com/)"

Links on that blog page:

“Young Girls XXX Porn Pictures”
“Girls [expletive] Eating”

Follow the “View my complete profile” link, and you’ll see
other blogs apparently (according to the person's blog) by
the same person, some with the same kinds of links.

I really wish the Libertarians would go start their own site.
If supporters of socialist, pro-abortion Republicans can post
here then so can Libertarians. Libertarians are pro-limited
gov't, low taxes, and pro-2nd Amendment. Egads, what do you
think make up most of conservatism anyway? Most Libertarians
are also pro-life and aren't the stereotype you make them out to be.

You do realize that blogspots are like any other internet
account...when one person is no longer using it, and choses to
close it down...after a period of time it becomes available
 to the public again?
Why do you have it out for this guy? Why are you doing
everything you can to ruin him? You are malicious,
and if you are trying to pass yourself off as “Christian”,
you should reevaluate yourself, and work to correct your own shortcomings.
BTW...You are the first one to have “wishful thinking”

We’ll see how it goes down. From where I’m standing
it appears he’s knowingly posted a link to a blog

Sorry. Yes that's it.
A quick search on Google returns 14,800 hits for "gcruse".
It doesn't take long to figure out there are several people
out there using that moniker. The announcement of the change
of blogs two years before the creation of the one you provided
the link to stands as evidence that the author of that blog and
"gcruse" you've had a disagreement with are probably not the same person.

"It's not immorality that will destroy the family.
The government will. Welfare reduces any need for
women to get married to a stable, hard-working man

make it easy for women to bail on a marriage
(most divorces are initiated by women)."

The government is certainly doing its part, but in large part
because those policies encourage vice rather than restrict and punish it.
